IBAN
What is an IBAN?
An IBAN is an account number with an international format established by the European Commission for Banking Standards.
The purpose of establishing (creating) and introducing the IBAN is to support the automated processes for bank payment orders and to reduce mistakes/errors caused by incorrectly entered account numbers. For this reason, it has been necessary to use an IBAN to designate the recipient's account number in the case of international payments to European Union countries since July 2003.
The structure
An IBAN can contain numbers/digits and capital letters
- 2 characters - the ISO country code
- 2 characters - the control number
- max. 30 characters - the special account number within the bank and the bank code
An IBAN in the Czech Republic consists of 24 alphanumerical characters
- 2 characters - CZ (the ISO country code)
- 2 characters - the control number
- 4 characters - the bank code
- 6 characters - the prefix (the first part of the account number)
- 10 characters - the second basic part of the account number
In its electronic form, an IBAN is stated without any gaps or other characters. It is used during the processing of payment orders within systems.
In its written form, an IBAN is stated in groups of four characters separated by gaps in order to provide greater transparency. This is used, for example, on invoices and so on.
